The Parading of the Queens Colour for the RAF – Saturday 2nd June 1962

This is one event that seems a tad hazy for me, although I was there on parade.

On Saturday 2nd June 1962 at 11 a.m. RAF Halton, the No.1 School of Technical Training, was honoured to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Birthday by parading the Colour that she had presented to the RAF. The Reviewing Officer was Her Majesty’s Lieutenant for the County of Buckingham, Brigadier Sir Henry Floyd, Bart., C.B., C.B.E.

Our guests were a mixture of parents, other relations and girlfriends, all of which had to be seated in their places by 10.40a.m. Dress code was Morning Dress or Lounge Suit with serving Officers had to be in uniform. No mention of what our ladies were expected to appear in though.

The Colour Squadron and Colour Escort were the RAF Regiment Colour Squadron with Senior Apprentice Entries in support. The Bands were the RAF Regional Band (or was it the RAF Central Band?) with the RAF Halton Bagpipe and Brass Bands to the rear.

At least we can say that the 96th Entry was of a very select few to have been chosen to be an active part in the Parading of the Queen’s Colour for the Royal Air Force while being an 18 year old apprentice at Halton.
